Introduction to GIAHS

In 2002, a global conference was held by FAO[1] to present traditional systems and methods, as well as the remaining important agricultural heritage in various regions of the world.

The GIAHS[2] is backed by various organizations, including IFAD[3], GEF[4], ISESCO[5], and UN[6] University, with the aim of conserving, managing, and transmitting indigenous agricultural practices while promoting knowledge and technology.

This system leads to food security and the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity. Traditional and regional agricultural systems that have been carefully studied and developed through innovation and maturity to promote the diversification of the food biosphere, as well as the sustainability and growth of agricultural products. 

In 2014, the National GIAHS Committee in Iran was established with Dr. Bakhshandeh as its leader.

It is noteworthy that the Estahban fig has been recorded as the fourth agricultural heritage system in Iran to be inscribed in the GIAHS.

Successful registration of agricultural systems with the FAO has been achieved by Algeria, Japan, China, India, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Iran, Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia and Chile.
