The fabulous secret phenomenon of Bar-Anjir

The fabulous secret phenomenon of Bar-Anjir

Dried fig is one of the precious horticultural crops in Iran, particularly in Fars province. The dried fig cycle originates from Fars province due to its spectacular climate conditions. This phenomenon "Bar Anjir" locally is called "Barak Anjir" and these non-edible fig fruits grow before the main production season, commonly at late spring and early summer on the trees. Bar Anjir plays an impressive and vital key role in pollination process and escalation productivity of fig trees.

The habitat and safe haven for fig wasp "Blastofaga[1]" is absolutely Bar-Anjir. Without Bar-Anjir the natural pollination process, fertilization and producing healthy and quality products will be obviously disturbed. One of the environmental tasks of "Bar-Anjir" protection life cycle of pollinator wasp. One of the biological function of "Bar Anjir" is the preservation life cycle of pollinator wasp.

Without Bar-Anjir, it drastically leads to the stopping blastophaga species life cycle and it could tangibly meet trees yield and productivity deduction. Bar-Anjir harmonizes and synchronizes the pollination time with harvesting time by utilizing the initial source of pollen.

Agricultural usages and local experiences:

Experienced Orchardists benefit from Bar-Anjir for pollination process in Estahban and other areas that have fig. Orchardists pick up early Bar-Anjir fruits from some special male fig trees, then carry these early Bar-Anjir fruits with basket inside fig gardens due to this process their inside wasps spread into female fig trees.

This traditional method is known as "Bar-Dadan" and it is one of the critical reasons for successful harvesting and productivity of dried figs in Iran.

Bar-Anjir phenomenon is a critical biological milestone in pollination process.

The understanding and familiarity of this phenomenon and appropriate benefiting of it leads to great performance, increasing quality of fig, and also causes a sustainable ecosystem for fig orchards.

As sustainable farming is the targeted goal of rural developments, so preserving of indigenous knowledge is valuable such as Bar-Dadan's  knowledge.
